Experience the rich musical flavor of Spain and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with LSO. After opening with the lively Capriccio Espagnol, Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini features the talented Jon Nakamatsu, gold medalist in the Tenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Bizet’s celebrated Carmen Suite No. 2 adds a Spanish flair, followed by Ginastera’s energetic Ballet Suite from Estancia.

Mother Goose arrives at this family concert to tell the audience the story of the Three Little Pigs, but is interrupted by Mr. Wolf, who has come to tell the true story, as written by Jon Scieszka. Actor and comedian Tim Marrone joins LSO for this concert, which includes music from Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite, Brahms’ Hungarian Dances and Bizet’s Carmen. Join us before the concert for a musical petting zoo.

LSO’s first Classical Series concert of the new year will tug at your heartstrings. Concertmaster Anton Miller solos on Rachmaninoff’s beautiful Vocalise, followed by the lush sounds of Tchaikovsky’s Serenade, Op.48. On the second half of the program, Alfred Schnittke’s theatrical and playful homage to masters Mozart and Haydn is a perfect companion to the vivacious Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 1.

The Lied Center for Performing Arts presents LSO in the emotionally-charged St. Matthew Passion, which features area choirs and five vocal soloists. J.S. Bach’s masterpiece recounts the story of Christ’s crucifixion by setting the Gospel of Matthew to music. Distinctive for its use of two orchestras and two choirs, the St. Matthew Passion has a musical texture that ranges from intricate counterpoint to simple chorales.

LSO’s own principal trumpet player Michael Thompson performs the bold and tuneful Concerto for Trumpet by Armenian composer Alexander Arutunian.
