Experience the beauty and magic of Italy with Lincoln’s Symphony Orchestra. Tchaikovsky’s popular Capriccio Italien opens this concert at the Lied Center. Enjoy excerpts from Puccini’s famous opera La Bohème, featuring two vocal soloists. The colorful imagery of Italy’s capital city is portrayed in the concert’s finale, Ottorino Respighi’s triumphant Pines of Rome.

Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake Suite, a delightful staple of the ballet repertoire, is followed by Franz Liszt’s powerful Totentanz, played by LSO’s principal keyboardist Richard Fountain. Bartok’s popular and virtuosic Concerto for Orchestra is infused with folk melodies from the composer’s native Hungary, and features soloistic passages for each section of the orchestra.

The famous music of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf is brought to life with a modern retelling of the classic tale. The orchestra is joined onstage by a bird, a cat, a duck, a boy and his grandfather and, of course, the big bad wolf! Join us for a pre-concert musical petting zoo.

On the second half of the program, LSO’s own concertmaster Anton Miller takes the stage to perform Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E Minor, one of the most popular violin concertos of all time.

Our season finale features LSO Principal Trombonist Jay Wise, playing Tomasi’s Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra, a virtuosic piece that reminds the listener of the trombone’s prominence in the jazz medium. Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2 is a climactic ending to the season with its lush romanticism and grand sweeping gestures.
